Carlos Rodríguez: six years in Madrid, Arraigo Social in eleven months

His consultant chose the padrón, the informe, and the employer letter in the exact order the Oficina de Extranjería expected.

Carlos arrived in Madrid in September of his twenty-fourth year, overstayed his tourist visa by three months, and then by years. He worked in a kitchen in Lavapiés, moved to a construction crew in Vallecas, and eventually to a logistics warehouse in Villaverde. He had three employers who paid him in cash, no padrón, no bank account, and a mother in Pereira who had stopped asking when he was coming back. He bought our book in year four. He did nothing with it. He called a consultant from our directory in year six.

The consultant’s first instruction was to register at the padrón municipal — immediately, that same day — and to do it under his real name at the address of the shared flat where he had been sleeping for the last two years. The flatmate had to sign a letter authorising him to register at the address. That signature took him three days of persuasion and a bottle of good aguardiente. The padrón certificate issued eleven days later became the single most important document in his file.

The next step was the Informe de Arraigo Social — a report from the Comunidad de Madrid certifying his social integration. His consultant knew that the social workers in his district preferred to see three specific things: a Spanish-language A2 certificate, a letter from a Spanish citizen vouching for his community ties, and participation in a vecinal association. Carlos signed up for an A2 course at the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas, joined the AMPA of a nearby primary school as a volunteer, and asked his landlord to write the vouching letter. All three were in his file within four months.

The hardest piece was the Oferta de Empleo. His warehouse employer had been paying him off the books and was not willing to sign a contract that would create a trail. His consultant found him a different employer — a small logistics company in Alcorcón whose owner had hired Arraigo Social candidates before and knew exactly how to format the one-year contract offer under Article 124.2 of the Reglamento. The new employer signed the Oferta on a Friday. The Oficina de Extranjería opened the file the following Thursday. The resolución favorable came four months later.

Carlos now has a Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero valid for one year, renewable, convertible to long-term residence after two renewals. He has sent his first legal payslip home to his mother in Pereira. He tells us the moment he cried was not when the card arrived but when he was able to walk into a bank in Madrid and open an account under his real name.
