Kwame Mensah: from courier bike to engineering role in eighteen months
Diploma recognition in Germany is a bureaucratic maze. His consultant knew every turn.
Kwame had been working as a bicycle courier in Frankfurt for just over two years when he contacted a consultant from our German directory. He had a Ghanaian Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology — one of the stronger engineering programmes in West Africa — and had been working the courier job because every attempt to get a formal engineering role had foundered on the question of whether his degree was recognised in Germany. Two employers had told him it was. One Ausländerbehörde had said it was not. He had stopped asking.
His consultant’s first move was to file an application with the Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen (ZAB) for a formal Zeugnisbewertung — a statement of equivalence between a foreign degree and the German qualification framework. The ZAB application costs 200 euros and takes three to four months. His consultant’s role was to package the Ghanaian transcripts, the course descriptions, the apostilled diploma, and the two-page cover letter in exactly the format the ZAB prefers. The Zeugnisbewertung came back with the rating H+ — fully equivalent to a German Bachelor of Engineering.
With the ZAB certificate in hand, Kwame’s situation changed overnight. His consultant helped him file a Fachkräfteeinwanderungsgesetz application, update his residence status from his existing permit to a §18b Blue Card equivalent, and apply directly to five engineering positions in the Frankfurt-Darmstadt area. The second position — a junior mechanical engineer role at a mid-sized industrial systems manufacturer — made him an offer within four weeks of his first application. His start date was six weeks after that.
Kwame has now been working as an engineer for just under a year. He has moved from a shared courier-sector flat in Griesheim to a studio in Bockenheim. He is sending roughly four times as much money home to his mother and younger sister in Kumasi as he was in his courier year. The courier bike is still in his cellar in case he decides, as he says only half-jokingly, to go back.
The point of Kwame’s file is that the ZAB Zeugnisbewertung is a two-hundred-euro administrative step that unlocks years of trajectory. His consultant’s role was not legal advocacy — it was knowing that this step existed, that it was accessible, and that the result would open doors. For many Ghanaian and Nigerian engineers in Germany, that step is the single most important intervention a consultant can offer.
“My consultant got my university diploma recognised in Germany. From courier to engineer in eighteen months.”
Outcome
ZAB Zeugnisbewertung (H+), Fachkräfte visa, engineering role in Frankfurt.
